Most people will never reach their full potential, yet almost all of us have the ability to achieve our full potential. So why do so many fail to live the life they deserve and desire? Simply put – we block our own success.
We spend almost all of our waking hours obsessing on what we don’t have, what we aren’t good at, and what we can’t do. We are our own worst enemy.
The good news is this – we have complete control to change these success-derailing habits.
In his book The 15 Irrefutable Laws of Growth, John Maxwell identifies 3 deceptively simple steps for removing the burden of disbelief that methodically destroys our confidence with pinpoint precision. Follow these 3 steps to begin building the level of confidence necessary to take your success to amazing new heights.
Step 1: Define Your Best Qualities
Make a list of your best personal qualities, and don’t stop until that list reaches 100 positive things about yourself. If needed, ask those who know you well for their input as you build your list. Once you reach 100, pick one word that best describes you and make that word your default word when you think about and when you describe yourself.
Step 2: Love and Believe in Yourself
You are what you think, so you might as well think you’re successful. To do that often requires us to change our thinking habits because we spend too much time thinking negative and limiting thoughts. Be positive and use positive language in your thinking and in your self-talk. If you find it a little bit of a challenge to make the switch to positivity, ask your SUCCESS team and other trusted friends to help you see yourself in a favorable manner. By doing this, you unleash the power of your mind to unlock the unused talents for seizing the many opportunities brilliantly disguised as life’s challenges.
Step 3: Add Value to Others
This is the easiest of the 3 steps because all it takes to grow your value is to add value to others. Simply focus your attention on contributing to the success of others by serving their needs. There are a variety of ways to do this. For example, my greatest successes have come from serving on volunteer boards and leading local chapters of professional associations. Additionally, I’ve mentored and coached people to new levels of success for years, and I happily share my knowledge and expertise using social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook) and this blog. The key is simple – whatever you do, spend 10% of your time investing in and adding value to others and you will reap significant benefits from doing so.
John’s 3 steps work because I’ve done them intuitively for years and my self-confidence has always been cited as a main reason people are attracted into my life. And let me tell you, the more you believe in yourself without becoming arrogant or egotistical, the more others are attracted to you. And the more people who trust and believe in you, the more successful you will become.
